frequently asked questions

How does someone know when their hot water system needs replacing or requires a service?

There are eight key issues to look out for including water leaking out of the hot water system, the pilot light not working or going out frequently, running out of hot water often, low water pressure or constant changes in pressure, rumbling or banging sounds from the system, changing water temperatures, rusty water or sediment in the water, and no hot water or cold water comes from the taps.

How do I select a hot water system?

If it's an existing hot water system that is being replaced the easiest way it to email us a number of photos and we will advise you on which system to purchase. Otherwise first you need to establish what kind of fuel source is available to your property – Gas, Electricity or Solar, then decide which system is best for you.

How much does it cost to install a hot water system?

Installation costs range from $399 to $499 for replacing an existing hot water system with the same type. Costs will be higher if additional valves are needed or if plumbing or electrical systems need to be upgraded.

Does a hot water system need servicing?

Yes, heating water, expanding and contracting, building and releasing pressure day in and day out put considerable wear and tear on a hot water system. Unfortunately, it is often the most neglected appliance in a house. Most modern hot water systems have a life expectancy of 7-12 years. Check your manufacturers and trade recommendations to see if your unit needs to be serviced every five years or bi-annual maintenance.

What are some popular hot water systems brands?

There are many brands of hot water systems in Australia such as Rheem, Dux, Rinnai, AquaMax, Bosch, Stiebel Eltron, Solarhart, Apricus, Quantum, Chromagen and Thermann.

My tank is leaking, how do I turn the hot water supply off?

There is a dedicated shut off valve on the cold inlet pipes of nearly every hot water system. This is generally a ball valve that is either on or off and should rarely be in between. Turn the valve clockwise as far as you can to stop any new hot water from entering your system.

My hot water sydney is leaking from the top or the base of the hot water system?

You should try and isolate the water supply from the hot water system by turning the isolation tap off, this will isolate your hot water system, then call us and so we can have it replaced for you.

I know I need a new hot water system, is there a better model or brand?

There are several thing to consider when replacing your current hot water system to ensure you’re getting the right system for your property such as what is your hot water systems size (Litres), are you happy with the current performance your hot water service, do you prefer efficiency over performance, what time of day do you spend the most extended periods of time using hot water? We ensure each time we speak with a potential customer that we understand what is required for them to have the best hot water service at the most affordable rates.

How do heat pump hot water systems work and what are the pros and cons?

A heat pump uses a fan to draw warm air into the system, which is then transferred to the water storage tank. Like a reverse fridge. Rather than pumping out hot air to keep your fridge cool, it pumps hot air in to heat the system up. Heat pumps circulate water from the storage tank through a compressor using Co2 refrigerant and the hot air drawn in from the outside temperature to heat the water and send it back to the storage tank. Heat pumps are one of the most energy efficient hot water solutions. While they need electricity to run, they are roughly three times more efficient than traditional electric water heaters. Heat pumps are only suitable in warm environments. While some heat pumps do come with boosters, if the climate isn’t suitable, there is little benefit in spending the extra money on a heap pump.

What is a "storage hot water system"?

A "storage hot water system" is when water is heated and stored in an insulated tank ready for use. Most gas, electric, solar and heat pump hot water systems use a tank.

What are the different types of heating methods for hot water?

The most common methods used to heat water in Australia are electricity, solar, gas and heat pumps.

Can I switch to a gas hot water system from electric?

If you have gas piping in your street, your home can be connected to natural gas. If gas is not available, you can install an LPG gas water system, which can be run from refillable gas bottles.

What size hot water system do I need?

Depending on the household, this will vary greatly. In most cases, if you live with a large family, you will need a larger tank than if you lived alone. It would be determined on a case-by-case basis, so we advise you to speak with our team to make an educated decision.

I am getting rusty looking water coming through my hot taps?

This means your hot water system has started to rust internally and requires replacing. This can't be repaired and the tank will eventually burst.

My relief valve is leaking constantly on the hot water system, what does this mean?

This isn't always a fault with the system as it acts as a safty feature. It means either there is too much water pressure coming into to the hot water system, or the valve is just faulty and will require replacing.

What is the diffrence between a heat pump hot water system and solar hot water system?

A heat pump doesn’t need solar collectors mounted on the roof. It uses technology to extract and intensify the warmth that is naturally in the air around us then uses that warmth to produce hot water. Traditional solar water systems use the warmth from the sun to heat the water.
